Brownie the Rabbit (~April 2013 – July 20, 2022)
Last night, surrounded by her family at Mt. Laurel Animal Hospital, Brownie crossed the rainbow bridge. She had a long full life that spanned at least three states and multiple loving homes. We learned about a month ago that she had cancer and took her to a riverside park yesterday to enjoy a last rest in the grass.
She was unfailingly sweet, emotionally supportive, playful, and joyful throughout the seven years we got to spend with her. She loved head pets, strawberries, bananas, taking down a whole green pepper in one go, and meeting new friends from all over the country. She was a great sport through several moves, including two multi-state moving truck rides, multiple apartments, variously living in and visiting Alex’s kindergarten classroom, and the arrival of a newborn human to our lives. We are so grateful that Graham had time to bond with her, excitedly saying “buh-buh” for bun-bun every time he saw her in the last few days. We will miss her so much.
“They went out past the young sentry, who paid the visitor no attention. The sun was shining and in spite of the cold there were a few bucks and does at silflay, keeping out of the wind as they nibbled the shoots of spring grass. It seemed to Hazel that he would not be needing his body any more, so he left it lying on the edge of the ditch, but stopped for a moment to watch his rabbits and try to get used to the extraordinary feeling that strength and speed were flowing inexhaustibly out of him into their sleek young bodies and healthy senses.
‘You needn’t worry about them,’ said his companion. ‘They’ll be all right—and thousands like them. If you’ll come along, I’ll show you what I mean.’
He reached the top of the bank in a single, powerful leap. Hazel followed; and together they slipped away, running easily down through the wood, where the first primroses were beginning to bloom.”
And here’s a fun video with Graham and Brownie, posted on Facebook.
(Indeed, this whole post was cross-posted on Facebook this morning.)
