Day Three: Statue of Liberty Survives, Zion and Glacier Lead Day Without Upsets

On the third day of first round action in the National Park Playoff, Statue of Liberty ensured it would not face the same fate as its fellow urban East-coast monument, #2 Lincoln Memorial. Though #14 Congaree jumped out to an early advantage, #3 Statue of Liberty pulled even around noon and ran up the score late for a 22-12 win. That was as close as things got in the Playoff this day and as close as a 14-seed came to contending. In the Pacific, #14 Channel Islands built a slim 3-0 lead in its match with #3 Joshua Tree before Joshua Tree went on a run and cruised to a 26-11 victory. Glacier dominated Wrangell–St. Elias, 34-6. And in the Southwest, Zion threatened to shut out Big Bend before the latter managed a small rally, still falling 27-4. The advancing three-seeds will take on winners of the 6/11 contests on May 15th.

Predictive brackets had a solid day, notching 87% correct picks. However, four of the five previously unblemished brackets had miscues, leaving just one perfect score through three days. In line with their close contest, Congaree was the favorite missed pick, with five selections from the nineteen submissions. Channel Islands and Wrangell–St. Elias followed with two each, and one predictor chose Big Bend.

Today’s action features 4v13 matches, including #4 Bryce Canyon vs. #13 Great Sand Dunes in the Southwest. Make sure to vote on Twitter!
