{"id":597,"date":"2009-08-27T20:30:54","date_gmt":"2009-08-28T00:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bluepyramid.org\/storey\/archives\/597"},"modified":"2009-08-27T20:31:29","modified_gmt":"2009-08-28T00:31:29","slug":"the-sojourn-in-pictures-south-dakota-part-two","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bluepyramid.org\/storey\/archives\/597","title":{"rendered":"The Sojourn in Pictures:  South Dakota (part two)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Part 7b in a 16-part stately series pictorially documenting the <a href=\"\/storey\/archives\/category\/summer-sojourn-2009\">Sojourn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday:  <a href=\"\/storey\/archives\/593\">South Dakota (part one)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today, we finish up South Dakota, with the Badlands through Mitchell&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The Badlands are a bit like a lunar landscape:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD27.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps like Mars:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD28.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But with rabbits!<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD29.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our first day there, it was quite stormy:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD30.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are paths atop most of the formations, leading out from the ridgeline upon which people can walk:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD31.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Twas nice and windy too:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD32.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The formations are all quite dramatic, a bit like getting to drive through the base of the Grand Canyon:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD33.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It had cleared up some by the time we headed out for our camping trip:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD34.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We were advised to register in the Backcountry log so someone would know we were out in the hinterlands &#8211; there are no other passes, fees, or registrations for Badlands camping!<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD35.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Inspiring:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD36.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A view of the rock formation which we camped against:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD37.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>See?<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD38.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The line cutting diagonally across this formation is a different type of rock that looks for all the world like a ribbon or a sports field line:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD39.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A rabbit?<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD40.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An eagle?<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD41.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A sunset!<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD42.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A moonrise&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD43.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next morning, it was plenty bright:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD44.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Still windshield with grasshopper:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD45.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of our hikes later in the day involved this epic ladder:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD46.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was worth getting to the top, though:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD47.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A Martian metropolis?<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD48.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bubbly formations in close-up:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD49.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the widest-spanning views:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD50.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We depart&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD51.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;for Mitchell and the Corn Palace!<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD52.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>San Francisco, a la corn:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD53.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a pretty corny scene:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournSD54.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next up:  Minnesota<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Part 7b in a 16-part stately series pictorially documenting the Sojourn.
