{"id":587,"date":"2009-08-21T09:25:14","date_gmt":"2009-08-21T13:25:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bluepyramid.org\/storey\/archives\/587"},"modified":"2009-08-21T09:25:33","modified_gmt":"2009-08-21T13:25:33","slug":"the-sojourn-in-pictures-new-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bluepyramid.org\/storey\/archives\/587","title":{"rendered":"The Sojourn in Pictures: New Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Part 3 in a 16-part stately series pictorially documenting the <a href=\"\/storey\/archives\/category\/summer-sojourn-2009\">Sojourn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday:  <a href=\"\/storey\/archives\/585\">Arizona<\/a><\/p>\n<p>From a car in the dark with a migraine:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournNM1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In line at the beloved Frontier Restaurant:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournNM2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My parents&#8217; backyard has become home to a small squirrel colony:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournNM3.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Much of my time in Albuquerque was actually spent on the issue of public outdoor drinking fountains, such as this one here in Petroglyph National Monument:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournNM4.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My favorite petroglyph (or <a href=\"\/duckandcover\">Duck&#8217;s<\/a> eldest ancestor.  Speaking of which, Duck and Cover should be back next week.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournNM5.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While not as scary as the centipedes, millipedes in Nuevo still pack a mighty scare.  This was one of about 12 we saw on the trails at Petroglyphs:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournNM6.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My second-favorite petroglyph (they aren&#8217;t all of duck-like birds, by the way &#8211; I&#8217;m clearly spoiling your sample here):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournNM7.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My parents in front of my Dad&#8217;s nifty carriage house garage doors:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournNM8.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Madrid is one of my favorite towns in New Mexico, where most of the houses look something like this (it&#8217;s pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable, which is pronounced just like the word &#8220;mad&#8221;, so instead of sounding like the Spanish capital for which it was surely named, it sounds like someone named Drid is upset):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournNM9.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite buildings in all the world, the La Fonda in Santa Fe:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/SojournNM10.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Two of my favorite things: Emily and La Plazuela, the restaurant inside the La Fonda.  I know &#8220;the La Fonda&#8221; is grammatically incorrect, but it&#8217;s how I grew up saying it and now I can&#8217;t stop.  Also, they have substantially ruined La Plazuela with its redecoration, mostly by making it too light and open when it used to be turquoisey and mysterious.
