{"id":372,"date":"2008-10-31T04:41:44","date_gmt":"2008-10-31T11:41:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bluepyramid.org\/storey\/archives\/372"},"modified":"2008-10-31T09:54:20","modified_gmt":"2008-10-31T16:54:20","slug":"the-night-before-all-saints","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bluepyramid.org\/storey\/archives\/372","title":{"rendered":"The Night Before All Saints"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>&#8216;Twas the night before All Saints, and all through the House<br \/>\nand Senate: no movement, no clicking of mouse.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The ballots were set by the mailbox with care<br \/>\nin hopes that St. Obama soon would be there.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Incumbents were out on the trail and stump<br \/>\nhoping to find just one more hand to pump.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And I on the couch with a bowl full of candy<br \/>\nhad settled in front of CNN with it handy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When a knock at the door threw me out of my seat<br \/>\nmy first inclination was to quickly retreat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But I knew that I&#8217;d have to answer the door<br \/>\nmaybe for a neighbor, perhaps someone poor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Perhaps for a candidate, wanting my vote<br \/>\nor a wayward painter, offering a new coat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When I cracked the door, my mind filled with wonder<br \/>\nmy view of the world so soon tore asunder.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>For there on my porch, where I had to play host<br \/>\nI came face to face with a real live ghost!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As I stared at it and my face flushed with heat<br \/>\nit raised up a bag and said &#8220;Trick or treat!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Relieved from my fears, I turned for my bowl<br \/>\nall too happy to pay a sugary toll.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>How could I have forgotten the point of this night?<br \/>\nChildren begging from strangers under moonlight!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So imagine my fear as I turned back around<br \/>\nthe door had been closed without making a sound!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>All I could hear as my face turned to ash<br \/>\nwas CNN talking today&#8217;s market crash.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But maybe the child had left for the streets<br \/>\nnot wishing to wait any longer for sweets.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As I drew in my hand, and was turning around<br \/>\nthere was the ghost, no longer earthbound!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It was floating about, as light as the air<br \/>\nand you&#8217;d best believe that this gave me a scare.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There were no limbs a-dangle and no strings attached<br \/>\nin my whole life I&#8217;d seen nothing this matched.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Its eyes were dead empty and my heart skipped a tick<br \/>\nI had to admit that this was quite a trick.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Feeling faint and woozy and likely to choke<br \/>\nI barely could hear when it actually spoke.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;You know, do you not, this can&#8217;t go on any longer<br \/>\na whole nation of people with their goal to monger.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;You steal and thieve while calling it &#8216;work&#8217;<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re rude to each other and then go berserk.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;You assume, do you not, that you deserve it all<br \/>\nbut blame everyone else whenever they fall.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;And your only true faith is in science and guns<br \/>\nwhile you mortgage the future and buy by the tons.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;And your only answer for the traps that you&#8217;ve set<br \/>\nis to accrue and accrue infinitely more debt.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Before I even had the chance to reply<br \/>\nit soared up the chimney, away it did fly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I wondered if others would be getting this warning<br \/>\nI wondered if I would wake up the next morning.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Then I heard an exclamation that made my mind riven<br \/>\n&#8220;Happy Halloween, you will not be forgiven!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;Twas the night before All Saints, and all through the House and Senate: no movement, no clicking of mouse.
